What El Tajín is
El Tajín was one of the great cities of ancient Mesoamerica, flourishing roughly between AD 900 and 1200. Its architecture of niches, stepped frets and flying cornices is unique in Mexico. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
What to see
Pyramid of the Niches, the icon of the site. Tajín Chico, the upper city where the elite lived. More than a dozen ball courts, some with carved reliefs. The site museum. And the Voladores, who perform their flying ceremony at the entrance plaza several times a day.
Getting there from Poza Rica
By car: about 15 km (around 20 minutes) on the highway toward Papantla, then follow the signs to the archaeological zone. By public transport: frequent buses and colectivos run from Poza Rica to Papantla; ask to be dropped at the El Tajín turnoff or continue to Papantla and take local transport. A taxi is the most direct option.
Flying in: El Tajín National Airport (PAZ) is in Tihuatlán, right next to Poza Rica, with flights mainly from Mexico City.
When to go
Go early: there is little shade and it gets hot by mid-morning most of the year. November to March is the most comfortable season. The Cumbre Tajín festival takes place every March around the spring equinox; book accommodation well in advance.
Make it a full day
Combine El Tajín with lunch in Papantla, a Pueblo Mágico known for its vanilla and the Voladores in front of the church. If you have more time, the beaches of Tecolutla and Costa Esmeralda are about an hour and a half away.
